Midland Rocketry Workshops
Since forming this club in late 2006 we have been asked and have now run many rocketry workshops. We offer rocketry workshops Scout Troops (Especially towards the Astronautics Badge), Schools, University's, Youth Groups etc.
Here are the details of our range of Rocketry Workshops...
The rocketry workshops are run by at least 2 people (All Range Safety Officers with the United Kingdom Rocketry Association), we will come out to give a presentation about rocketry, model rockets and that will be happening in the workshop (build and fly a model rocket) and also take questions. We shall also bring some of our own personal larger model rockets for you look at however we do not usually fly these at the workshops.
We will bring all the necessary bits including model rocket kits, adhesives, recovery gear, launch gear, launch pads, batteries, controllers, PMR's etc for the running of the workshop. You do not need to provide anything apart from suitable land to fly from* We use the
UKRA Safe Distances chart for guidance.
MRC Level 1 Workshop:
The MRC Level 1 workshop is the basic workshop we do and it is for a minimum of 10 attending people (we are happy to do smaller groups but you will be charged as per the minimum numbers)
Suitable for all ages.
Each person in the attending group will be given a LPR** model rocket kit which they will build themselves (with our help) during the course and then get to fly it at the end of the workshop*** on an Estes rocket motor and then be able to take it home.
The Level 1 workshop schedule is along these lines..
Introduction: 5 minuets
Lecture on model rocketry with questions: 20 minutes
Build Time: 1 hour 30 minuets approx
Clean Up: 10 minuets
Launch: 3 minuets per rocket (10 rockets = 30 minutes)
Finish and final clear away.
MRC Level 2 Workshop:
The MRC Level 2 workshop is the next level up from the basic workshop we do and it is for a minimum of 12 attending people (we are happy to do smaller groups but you will be charged as per the minimum numbers) Suitable for ages of 12+
We form small working groups (usually of 4 attendee's per group) who will work towards building a MPR** type rocket during the course and then get to fly it at the end of the workshop*** on an more powerful BP/AP type motors. The rocket kit can be taken home by a member of the group.
The Level 2 workshop schedule is along these lines..
Introduction: 5 minuets
Lecture on model rocketry with questions: 30 minutes
Build Time: 1 hour 30 minuets approx
Clean Up: 10 minuets
Launch: 10 minuets per rocket (3 rockets = 30 minutes)

MRC Level 3 Workshop:
The MRC Level 3 workshop is the next level up from the Level 2 workshop we do and it is for a minimum of 12 attending people (we are happy to do smaller groups but you will be charged as per the minimum numbers) Suitable for ages of 14+
We form small working groups (usually of 4 attendee's per group) who will work towards designing a MPR** type rocket explaining what Centre of Gravity/Pressure mean etc and may involve some maths. Once the rocket is designed and shown to be stable they will get to build and then get to fly it at the end of the workshop*** on an more powerful BP/AP type motors. The rocket kit can be taken home by a member of the group.
The Level 3 workshop schedule is along these lines..
Introduction: 5 minuets
Lecture on model rocketry with questions: 45 minutes
Rocket Design Process 1 hour
Build Time: 3 hours approx
Clean Up: 10 minuets
Launch: 10 minuets per rocket (3 rockets = 30 minutes)
Finish and final clear away.
Costs:
There are 3 sections to the the costs. These are Build and Fly Costs,Adhesive Costs and Travel Costs.
Level 1 Build And Fly Costs:
Per Person is £11.50 per person.
This includes the model rocket kit and an Estes BP rocket motor.
(example: 10 people attending the cost is £115)
Level 2 Build And Fly Costs:
Per Person is £12.50 per person.
This includes the model rocket kit and an BP/AP rocket motor.
(example: 12 people attending the cost is £150)
Level 3 Build And Fly Costs:
Per Person is £16 per person.
This includes the model rocket kit and an BP/AP rocket motor.
(example: 12 people attending the cost is £192)
Adhesive Costs:
£20 - This covers Cyanoacrylate adhesives and it's debonder or 5 minute Epoxy.
Never use Cyanoacrylate without having debonder nearby.
Travel Costs:
Because all 3 of us live in different parts of the Midlands, so when we come out to you we would all meet up somewhere centrally and then travel on in 1 or 2 cars.
To make things easy when calculating the travel charge we use a central point in Birmingham (Birmingham New Street Station) and then work out the distance to your location using the MultiMap route finder.
Goto this website and put in the post code of B2 4ND (Birmingham New Street Station) into Box A and put your location into Box B then click "Find".
Take the distance and times it by 2 to get the overall distance we would travel and multiple this by 30p per mile.
(The travel charge allow us to cover some of our fuel charges and maybe get a bit to eat on the return leg).
So are you interested? Then follow the following to work out your costs..
1) Select what type of Rocketry Workshop you would like to have.
2) Find some suitable land at your location using the
UKRA Safe Distances chart for guidance. Look up the workshop level you have chosen and see what Site Diameter you need.
3) Work out our travel charge.
4) Calculate the "Build and Fly" costs from your chosen rocketry workshop and take the "Per Person" charge and multiple by the number of attendee's
5) Add on the adhesive charge of £20 to the running total to get your final cost of the Rocketry Workshop.
6) Using the details on our contact page contact us and we shall arrange things.
We are a non-profit club so the prices above are the retail prices that we pay for the kits, motors, adhesives etc.
We do not charge for any of our time as we like what we are doing and also it's keeps the costs down for you, however if you would like to make a donation to the club then this is fine and we shall gladly accept it as it will go towards equipment for the club and workshops.
One last thing, the club does not have any sort of banking facilities so we appreciate all transactions to be CASH and payable during the workshop.
Thank you and we hope to see you soon.
* We have to fly within the UKRA Safe Distances and Site Dimension Guidelines so please don't expect us to ignore these, so choose wisely as you are not an exception to the rule. These guidelines are there for a reason, for your safety and our Safety. Remember we are putting objects up in the air which if they do not recover correctly can come down quite fast and injure people. That is why we are Range Safet Officers and obey the the UKRA code.
** Glossary:
LPR = Low Power Rocketry (Usually means flying on rocket motors from Class A to Class D)
MPR = Mid Power Rocketry (Usually means flying on rocket motors from Class E to Class G)
HPR = High Power Rocketry (Usually means flying on rocket motors from Class H to Class M)
*** The flying of the rocket may not be achievable at the workshop due to either site restrictions, altitude restrictions or weather conditions, so we will arrange for the flights to happen at one of our regular monthly flying events at Midland Rocketry.
Example:
Scout Troop wants to do a Rocketry Workshop as part of the Astronautics Badge
They have 20 scouts attending.
They have chosen the Level 1 Rocketry Workshop
They have looked at the
UKRA Safe Distances chart for guidance.
They have enough land for a Level 1 Rocketry Workshop at 60m.
They work out our costs for Travel. (B2 4ND to Loughbrough, A Round trip of 96.68 miles, so multiply this by 30p per mile to get £29.00)
Added on the Adhesive charge of £20 to get a running total of £49.00
Then taken the Level 1 Per Person Build and Fly charge of £11.50 and multiply this by the 20 attendees to get a cost of £230 which is then added to the running total to get a final cost of the whole Rocketry Workshop being
£328.00
In addition to the above activities we are able to offer alternative workshops and workshop enhancements, plus launch facilities.
Please contact MRC directly for final workshop costings.
Please note: This is a guide to costs so that you may get an idea of potential costs for a rocket workshop. Variables to be considered are such as if it is a split day event and we need to stay over and changes to motor and material costs.
